“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.” John 13:35

I was told that God was love.
You’d think it was a good thing, a good start.
Alas, nothing of the sort.

The God I was given was narcissistic, only wanting to see himself in creation.
The God I was given was a bully: ‘Do what I say or you’ll pay.’
The God I was given was psychotic, sending his own son to earth and arranging for him to be crucified.
The God I was given was jealous: ‘If you leave me I’ll kill you.’

Follow the rules and do not kill.
Strange words for a God of death.
‘Do as I say, not as I do.’

I was told: ‘He sent us a guide, the Bible, to follow.’
With clarity, regardless of the contradictions:
‘Do it right or you’re doomed.’

Love is being a mind-reader, absolute truth,
like trying to find a needle in a haystack,
except your life depends on it.

Love was a strap hanging on the back of the door.
Love was an affair with the neighbour.
Love was: ‘Be who people expect you to be.’
Love was Hallmark cards and Disney movies

Pretty and handsome wins every time,
evil is the guy with the dark goatee.
It’s the way God made it, believe it.

I was told that God was love.

Bit of a shock when I met God.
Bit of a surprise when I found love.
Turned out neither of them were anything like I’d been led to believe.

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John13:35
